Captions: 11:02:18 Welcome to vision forwards, tech, connect, live, connecting you to the world of a assistive technology. 11:02:25 And now here are your hosts, Corey and Luke 11:02:29 Everybody. Hello! Welcome to tech Kenneth. Live the first show of 2,023. 11:02:37 Yes, January the fifth, 2,023. 11:02:42 Is it true? I think it's right? Yeah, 2023. 11:02:45 Call. Yeah. By New Year, you kind of a frame here. I was just gonna ask you, actually, I started moving, as you can see, nothing has changed in the New Year. 11:02:53 A year has gotten by, and we are running as smooth and tip-top as we always have. 11:02:59 Yes, which means not very smooth. It's being an interesting start to the day here. 11:03:06 Our Division board in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we should go through. 11:03:09 Not that Jonathan has time. Yes, but I think we should go through all of 2,020 two's tech connect lives, yeah, and cut out every time we start with man it's been an interesting start, because I think we do it pretty much. 11:03:26 All people, no, biology is hard. We I just think it's funny, because I think we pretty much start every second. 11:03:33 I completely agree with the Apollo, asks, what was it the cameras New Year's resolution? 11:03:39 I'm assuming this was a job. This is a well camera. 19. 11:03:44 I'm going to say fourk you have a very close 10 atp. 11:03:45 But Paula, in this day and age that's a little bit low. 11:03:49 So I think that company is to be honest. Did you, Luke? 11:03:52 Did you ever go? New Years? It was very uneventful. 11:03:56 Yeah, yeah, we actually knew years Eve, we did absolutely nothing. Did you make it to midnight? 11:04:00 Yeah, we did, yeah, okay, just and then New Year's Day, we had some friends over. 11:04:04 And that was lovely. But yeah, for the most part very uneventful. 11:04:06 I think you went to a friend's house except one number. Yeah. 11:04:10 It was a family family, and dogs party. There was many kids and many dogs running around. 11:04:15 Who enjoyed it most. The adults, the kids, or the dogs. 11:04:18 Well, the buddy that I go to loves cooking, and so there was only like 6 of us there, 6 adults, plus a bunch of kids. 11:04:26 He had more food, than I've ever seen in my life, and so I'm thinking the dogs had the best time, because they had. 11:04:32 I think they got a lot. Be a good food and little kids usually means dogs are getting fed. 11:04:37 It's a very handy to know a friend who's good at cooking. 11:04:40 He love. He not only does he love doing it, but he's a crazy, good cook, that's awesome. 11:04:45 So yeah, it was good time. Yeah, very nice, very nice. Hope. 11:04:47 Everybody else had a wonderful New Year's Eve, and also a wonderful start to the New Year. 11:04:53 So far, it hasn't been so bad here. This is our first season. 11:04:56 Yeah, this is our first week at work since New Years, and it was a short week as we were off the money. Yeah, so far we haven't had any disasters. 11:05:03 So I think we're off to a decent start. Yeah. 11:05:06 But I mean some. Consider this show a disaster. Well, we're waiting for thirst. 11:05:10 We'll see how the show comes today before making any any film decisions. 11:05:14 But yes, okay, everybody is how a great New year we are, of course, coming to you from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the weather today is not too bad. 11:05:22 A bit of light snow, but nothing too crazy, and we are looking forward to talking about screen. 11:05:28 Magnification on the old PC. Today we are going to be communicating to magnification, behavior, loss. 11:05:36 Oh, Bohemia, we have. I don't know if that's how you pronounce that word. 11:05:39 I think it's a behemoth so close, right? 11:05:41 But that's 2 of them, though. But he may. We have the windows magnifier, which some of you may be aware of from Microsoft windows, and also we have Zoom text which some of you may be familiar with from freedom scientific, but which one is the prime magnification Option what would you say I mean at this 11:06:04 Point love for people. So 2 really quick things I last tech connect, live. 11:06:09 We, did for 2,022 back in December. 11:06:11 Yeah, was awesome. It's a great participant, and we'd love the same level of participant participant participation. 11:06:20 Yeah. So that's my first thing, as I obviously use that chat in a Q&A, and as much as much information. 11:06:27 You have questions and cowbils. If you're if you're part of Harry Potter. 11:06:33 Sure, yes, and this owl mail, yeah. Facebook messenger and smoke signals. 11:06:37 Yes, although we haven't set that up just yet, so that'll be next week. 11:06:42 We do have a soup can with string. But my question for you, Luke, is, when looking at a third party magnification. 11:06:53 So obviously not the windows one that's built in is zoom text. 11:06:56 Pretty much the only I mean, I know there's a couple other ones on the market right supernova. 11:07:03 Yeah, I don't know what the situation is with supernova at the moment, and honestly, I've never really engaged with it yeah, that much which is weird because Dolphin are a British company. 11:07:10 So yeah, I should probably support them. But yeah, I zoom, yeah, I don't know anything that going anymore. 11:07:16 I assume. Yeah, I mean, they were cool because they you could run that direct from a USB drive without administrative privileges. 11:07:20 Yeah, that was pretty handy back in the day. But yeah, I mean, if anybody knows if anybody's using anything other than windows magnifier apple, Macs built in magnification or zoom text, then it does. 11:07:33 Yeah, it does seem like zoom. Text is kind of the Bahimi of third-party magnifiers at this point. 11:07:41 Yeah, definitely, the one that I in my, history. I've always been most aware of but maybe that's a Us. 11:07:47 Thing, and I and I don't, and I'm not aware of any like on the screen, reader, side. 11:07:53 You have Nvda as a free, open source. Yeah, I'm not aware of really any free, open source magnifiers outside again, of built into the operating system. 11:08:01 That's a really great point. And I wonder if it's just because the built in accessibility is good. 11:08:04 But really the windows stuff didn't start to get good until windows 10. 11:08:09 So, yeah, yeah, who knows? If anybody has any insight please let us know. 11:08:14 This is a very audience participation directed Show. We'll love to hear from people in the audience who've got experience, and, you know, want to give their 2 cents. So feel free to put in the chat all the Q&A. 11:08:26 Any comments you might have as we go through here in the Q. And A. 11:08:28 We do have something, but of course it's a joke, because we also love jokes. 11:08:32 This joke from Gary? Why was the snowman rummaging through a bag of carrots? 11:08:37 Well, it's gonna be something about like his nose. 11:08:41 Yes, yes, could smell he no, no, he knows no better. 11:08:48 Yeah, yeah. On the right track. He was picking his knife. 11:08:53 Enjoy sound effects on the show that one gets. Thank you. New Year jokes are still as bad as ever. 11:09:03 So some would say, worse. We have 2 jokes. Yeah, look out alright. 11:09:09 So Jonathan is, gonna get us our joke for today. 11:09:11 Or it sounds like we might have 2. Jonathan joke away. 11:09:13 What do we have right? Well, we're always willing to compete with our viewers for a best joke. 11:09:19 Yeah, this one. I found just this morning Corey, you were talking about wonderful New Year's Eve meals. 11:09:25 I know that me and my sister cooked an awful lot, but appetizers are always a bit of a bit of a pain. 11:09:29 I know that we were spending a long time cutting up some cheese, sausages, and all that. 11:09:33 Sure, but with that in mind, what is something that nobody should eat on New Year's Eve 11:09:43 Big, the big apple. Oh, maybe maybe. In fact, fire crackers. 11:09:53 I don't know what I meant to say. It was oh, and then just the second one here. 11:10:03 Something to do with hoops missing donkey steel. 11:10:12 I'm not sure. Well, you wouldn't want them to travel more, thank you, Jonathan. 11:10:23 That was a wonderful job. No, except you want want them twice. 11:10:28 I mean, nobody's perfect, you know. I actually hear it on a delay. 11:10:32 So I don't actually get to respond all right, everybody. 11:10:36 So I guess we should probably get this puzzle started. 11:10:41 Good new years. Punch. Yes, and the wise words of pink. 11:10:47 Yeah, I actually heard it in the car on the way. In this one. That's the only reason I thought, it all right. 11:10:53 Here is all computer for those of you who can't see we are displaying the computer on the screen here, and for those of you who aren't familiar with what a computer is. 11:11:03 Well, you're probably not going to get a lot of this show. 11:11:07 I'm pretty sure you're probably on a computer viewing the show. 11:11:10 So I'm guessing. There are certain assumptions we can make today. 11:11:14 This is a computer, we all running the esteemed windows. 11. 11:11:18 Yeah, those of you. Not running windows. 11. You might be running windows. 10. 11:11:22 Yeah, for those of you, not running windows. 10. You're probably not learning windows. 11:11:27 8, but you might be running windows 7, which I recommend upgrading to windows 10 or 11 immediately. 11:11:33 Yes, for those of you, not say 7. You're probably winning windows. 11:11:36 Xp. My question would be, How did that happen? Here? And also, how is like, if you were even working? 11:11:41 Now, although saying that I did go to a client's house, and he had a computer with with windows Xp. 11:11:47 Pretty good, and it was it was it was such a long time since I used it. 11:11:51 I couldn't even remember what how to do anything. That's fine. 11:11:55 Yeah, crazy, anyway. So this computer here, when windows 11, the latest version of windows and we have zoom text magnifier reader, 2,022 on the screen. 11:12:03 Now for those of you who are not, who are not familiar with zoom text magnifier, reader, this is a screen magnification software. 11:12:08 You do have to purchase it, it is available from freedom, scientific, and you can do one of 2 things. 11:12:14 Either purchase outright, or you can subscribe their subscription price. 11:12:20 Corey is well, I'm I'm guessing it's the same as Jaws but maybe I'm wrong I actually don't know $90 a year. 11:12:29 Okay. And I'm going to assume that zoom text is probably darn close. 11:12:34 But I bet you, if we stall just a little bit longer then maybe we will be able to be a producer. 11:12:39 Might be typing away. But yeah, anyways, the subscription jaws is 90. 11:12:44 I'm guessing it's good now, do you have to pay the upfront, or can you pay month by month? 11:12:47 No, you typically need to pay it up front once a year. 11:12:49 We considering the retail price of these things, is generally pretty high, like zoom. 11:12:53 Text was always around the 800 markers, 595. 11:12:57 I believe, yeah, yeah, fusion. Then, obviously, you're gone way up. 11:13:01 But that's because Jonathan, the website, says that for a student annual license, $80 a year for home, you 85 to 95. 11:13:11 Oh, yeah, I tend to the client. When I work with clients for jaws, I tend to lean towards the subscription base. 11:13:20 Now I think that the upfront, you know there's a couple benefits to it first. 11:13:24 It's a much less, you know. It's it's much less upfront. 11:13:29 Right? 85, or $90 a year versus the 600 to a $1,000 up front. 11:13:34 It always as long as you continue to pay. You always have access, and you always get access to the newest aversion. Right? 11:13:41 The other part, that one of the issues, when you, if you purchase zooms, text straight out, if you don't purchase the Sma or software maintenance agreement, then each year there is going to be a $200 or so cost to upgrade and the more years you get let that 11:13:59 Gap go, the more it's gonna cost you. So even though you buy it out right? 11:14:03 Yes, most of the time. That's probably going to be okay for a good number of years. 11:14:07 It's not like you always have to have the latest and greatest, but at some point you are going to end up, paying probably close to 4, $500 again to upgrade. 11:14:17 So at that point, you know $85, you know. You're looking. 11:14:22 You can get an easy 5 years or more. Oh, yeah, you know, I think there's a philosophical discussion to be had, probably not to right now. 11:14:29 Yeah, but about the whole software as a service kind of set up. 11:14:35 More and more companies companies are migrating toward, and the fact that you are essentially renting. 11:14:40 So you spend significant amounts of money without actually owning anything. 11:14:45 Sure. And you know it's it's an interesting kind of conundrum whether that's a good thing or not. 11:14:52 There's a lot of positives to it, but also you know, there's no ownership. 11:14:56 Now, I think, with people doing stuff like streaming movies and everything being so used to doing that type of thing and not opening any of that content.
